Thanks for the Blogging

I'm currently working a boring receptionist job to make some easy money before starting grad school in August. For the past three weeks or so, I have had little to do except surf the net all day. Well, I just wanted to thank you all for keeping me thoroughly entertained. When I see those names lit up on my buddy list, a surge of joy runs through my soul. I also feel slightly guilty for knowing about everyone else's life and saying very little about my own. So here goes.

I graduated from WKU last May and immediately moved to LA for some crazy reason. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. But, it made me stronger and more confident and more aware of what I wanted out of life. After working as a drug counselor at a methadone clinic out there, I knew that I needed to go back to my roots and try to get into grad school for counseling.

I moved back to TN in February and have not looked back. It has been so great to be back around the friends and family I love and missed so much. I got into Lipscomb's graduate program in counseling with an assistantship which will pay half of my tuition...yay! At the end of grad school, I will be an LPC, or a Licensed Professional Counselor. I would love to be a marriage counselor eventually.

So, that's my life in a nutshell as the saying goes. Life is good. God is good. And I'm feeling content for the first time ever.

I would say that I hope you all are well, but from the blogs, I know that you are! Keep up the entertaining work...yall know I love it!

Procrastination.

Pleonast is seriously the devil. So is Facebook. I'm not on myspace, but I'm sure that one's pretty bad too. Whenever I have a paper due or a test to study for, I get on Facebook or Pleonast and browse stuff forever, until I feel bad and try to get back to my work for at least 15 minutes. Then I think, "Well I'll just look again for a few minutes as a little break for myself." What ends up happening is I look at Facebook and Pleonast far longer than I actually do work, and I end up staying up all night doing something that would normally have taken about one third of the time. Does any one else know what I'm talking about?

So, I'm going to get back to work now...at least I hope. I mean, this is just getting ridiculous.

I'm sick of the old entry.

Well right now I'm taking tons of classes, as it is my last semester in college!! Crazy! Who knows where this life takes me?

I'm realizing more and more that grad school is something I'm really gonna do. But, I definitely need a break first and that is where Los Angeles, CA comes in. Can't wait.

I've decided to totally change my mind about a lot of things, and it feels great. That's really vague, but I wanted to say it.

Done for now.

Life at the Barrel

I work with about 8 homosexual male servers. The experience has been eye opening. I've developed friendships with most of them, even though they all know exactly how I feel about it. I have struggled, though, with just how close I should let myself get to them. I don't want to ever seem accepting of thier lifestyle, but I don't want to turn them off either. It's tricky. I hope that I've been a light, but then sometimes I wonder if they think they are converting me-- (if that makes sense.) Because of this strange experience, I think I want to particularly focus on homosexuality in my counseling studies someday in the future. I want to get to the bottom of it and somehow try to help those people who struggle with it.

  • jesspico
Go you. That's something I've been thinking about a lot lately... we've been studying "orientation" in physiological PSY, so it's been on the brain a good bit.

We actually talked about it last Wednesday.. my teacher was arguing how it's biological b/c of findings in twin studies. I brought up this argument...

You know how psychologists claim that if you have alcoholism in your family tree, naturally... you're genetically predisposed to become an alcoholic, too. We have a CHOICE as to whether or not we become an alcoholic. Why is that supposedly 'not the case' with homosexuality??

Yep, I stumped my teacher. It was pretty cool.
    by jesspico at 10/30/06 4:00AM
  • nickomundo
I think homosexuality is a lot more serious than we think. It's something we need to stop joking about and start learning how to deal with. We sometimes treat them like they're somehow worse than alcoholics or drug users or fornicators or adulterers or liars. But in the end, they need just as much compassion and love from us as any other sinners. We're all sinners, and isn't funny how quickly we like to label others as worse than us?
    by nickomundo at 10/30/06 8:52AM
  • jesspico
And I agree. We've all heard PLENTY of lessons/talks on how homosexuality is wrong. We get it. Why not have talks about how to HANDLE those who struggle with homosexuality?? Aren't we supposed to help in love?

i'm with nick on this. we don't need to judge these people. just like any other sinner, our condemnation is not going to get them any closer to heaven. I don't discuss these issues even with my gay friends.....it is not conduscive to a meaningful conversation about salvation. is it a sin?....yes, but is it necessary for us to have all of our sins worked out before we come to the Lord?...absolutely not. i think you are doing the right thing. show them love, like they were anyone else, they don't need to know anything you think about them other than the fact that they need God's grace like everyone else.

Fun Facts I've Learned In School:

1. The phrase "rule of thumb" was a literal term in the law that meant a man had the right to beat his wife with an object no bigger in circumference than the width of his thumb.

2. The phrase "mad scientist" comes from the fact that scientists used to love to experiment with mercury. If you handle too much mercury and it gets in your system, you go insane.

3. Have you ever wondered why some people say the stork brings babies? Well, I have the answer. Back in the day in Europe, storks would nest on top of roofs in the winter to stay warm. When people saw this occuring, they would say, "Well, the storks are here--there are going to be a LOT of babies this year!" In reality, the storks would sit on the roofs only in extremely cold temperatures. People during this time could barely leave their houses because it was so cold. SO they used each other to "keep warm!" Storks = cold weather = more babies!

4. There is actually a group in this country designed to decriminalize prostitution. They call themselves COYOTE. Guess what it stands for? Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics! Crazy.

5. Tennessee is number 4 on the list of most violent states in the country! That's a little upsetting. Also, the south is the most violent part of the country to live in. Go figure.

I think that's all. I find this stuff interesting, but it's cool if you don't!
